Autism Access

Please Touch Museum’s Autism Access Program provides families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) with innovative tools to make a museum visit more comfortable and enjoyable. The program creates a comprehensive welcoming structure for families of children with ASD through the following initiatives:

  • Accessibility tools for families of children with ASD include museum stories and gallery maps
  • Specialized training focusing on children with ASD and their behavioral patterns
  • Mobile programming enabling children who would otherwise not be able to visit the museum to interact with PTM-themed games and toys
  • Special Autism Access evening events for families of children with ASD
  • Games and toys designed for children with ASD available in the Kids Store

Museum Stories describe each of the museum’s exhibits from a child’s perspective and will help you and your child choose the exhibits you want to visit. The guide, specially designed for children with developmental disabilities, utilizes visual messages, and is appropriate for any child who would like to know about exhibits and activities in the museum. Guides and maps are available at the Admissions desk as well as on the website.

Special Exhibit coming in 2011

access/ABILITY is a highly engaging and interactive exhibit promoting disability awareness. It celebrates the different capabilities in all of us, dispelling myths and encouraging open questioning and curiosity. Organized around the things we all do every day – go places, communicate, think about things, have fun, the exhibit challenges our motor skills, and ways of thinking, while encouraging us to try doing things differently.
